
DT703: Assessment in Higher Education
Description:
This module will discuss the concepts of assessment, measurement, evaluation and testing; and the integral part that assessments play in the teaching and learning process. Formative and summative evaluation will be considered.
Different ways of assessing students work and grading will be discussed together with consideration for the broader issues of validity, reliability and objectivity. Problems and issues related to assessment will be discussed.

Content:
1. Assessment for learning. Why, What and How? Assessment-related issues. Necessary basics: Goals and objectives. Concepts of testing, measurement, evaluation and assessment.
2. Purposes, priorities, processes in assessment in higher education. Present approaches and future challenges. Forms of assessment: different methods and innovative procedures for higher-order thinking skills and critical and creative thinking skills.
3. Development of quality assessment instruments: techniques & procedures. Evaluation criteria for quality measures: validity, reliability & objectivity issues.
4. Management and interpretation of assessment data. Basic and related statistics: In search of a fair system of awards.
5. Reporting of assessment data for different pueposes: formative and summative evaluation. Grading and moderating: problems and issues.
Assessment mode: By assignment (Plus oral presentation and classroom participation and sharing).
