  The Learning Science Lab (LSL) of the National Institute of Education (NIE) invites suitable applicants to apply for the position of a Research Assistant/Associate. The successful applicant will work under the supervision of Assistant Professor Manu Kapur. He/she will assist in a research project (Ref: MK 13-06) on reconceptualizing the role of scaffolding in problem-solving settings. A one-year full time contract will be offered, starting as soon as possible. Flexible work arrangements can be negotiated.

  Responsibilities:
 

Working closely with faculty researchers, the successful candidate will be involved in:

  • Literature Review, Analysis, & Writing

  • Preparation of research materials

  • Project management, eg., liaison with the participating schools

  • Data collection ,transcription, collation, & analysis

  Requirements:

  Research Assistant - GIS in Schools (Ref: LY 11/06)

  We are looking for a full time or part-time research assistant to conduct research on problem-based learning using geographic information system (GIS) technologies. Candidates should have a solid background in geography and GIS technologies and is familiar with the secondary education in Singapore. Educational background in learning science and technology is desirable.

  Requirements:
 
  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in geography or spatial sciences with proven experience in GIS technology; excellent communication and interpersonal skills to promote good working relationships with schools and co-workers; good organisation and self-motivational skills.

  Research Associate/Assistant (Ref: LCK 05/06 & 12/06)

  Responsibilities:
 

Co-design curricula with researchers and teachers on mathematics that leverage on technology; implement research design; do classroom observations; interview teachers and students; analyze data; write research reports. Applicants for RA positions have the opportunity to pursue a graduate degree programme through this research, and to pursue leading-edge research with international collaborators.

  Requirements:
 
  • A good honours or Masters degree
  • Good understanding of primary and secondary school mathematics curricula.
  • Undertaken coursework in educational and/or cognitive science research methods.
  • Solid English writing skills.
  Desirable:
 
  • Been a mathematics teacher or researcher in mathematics education before
  • Experience with computer-based tools for mathematics, e.g. GSP or graphing calculators
  • Experience with quantitative and qualitative educational research.
  • Some skills in technical development, e.g. Flash or Java scripts.
   
  Part-Time Research Assistants (Transcribers)

  We are looking for people to transcribe audio to text. We have estimated to have a total of 40 to 50 hours of audio to be transcribed. The rate of transcribing is S$60 per hour of transcribed audio. For example, if you transcribe 2 hours of audio, you will be paid $120. Experienced in transcribing and those who are able to start immediately are preferred.
