Research Agenda

The following research questions/topics have
been devised to encourage greater focus in
research efforts of NIE staff and postgraduate research students. They are broadly derived
from the three Ministry of Education (MOE)
priorities of teaching critical and creative
thinking, using information technology, and emphasising National Education (NE) in the
school curriculum. Various incentives may be provided to facilitate research in these questions/
topics. They may be used by the NIE grants
funding committee to give preference to these topics and supervisors to encourage research students to conduct research in these fields in
order to get more expert supervision.
1 Teaching Creative & Critical Thinking

1. Fostering metacognitive practices in the
    classroom through teachers' modelling;

2. Metacognitive style of principals in their
    decision-making and leadership;

3. The effect of using the calculator/computer
    in primary mathematics on mental mathe-
    matical processing of primary pupils;

4. How can critical and creative thinking be
    effectively taught to pupils at all levels of
    the educational systems

5. How can we use IT to develop pupils' critical
    and creative thinking skills ?
2 The Use of Information Technology (IT)

1. The impact of IT on the cognitive, communi-
    cative, social-cognitive, socio-emotional,
    moral, physical, and aesthetic development
    of children of different age groups;

2. The effect of IT on students' literacy and     numeracy;

3. How can we make IT more useful for     students' ability to write and to organize     increasing amounts of information?

4. Cross-cultural research on the impact of     telecommunications on critical and creative     thinking; and

5. The effect of different models of the role of IT     in the classroom.
3 Attitudes, values and thinking

1. What attitudes and values influence pupils'
    thinking? (links between values, critical and
    creative thinking, and NE);

2. What are the enabling conditions for the     teaching of values and thinking in the     Singapore classroom?;

3. What are the teacher skills and environmen-     tal conditions that promote the learning of
    attitudes and values?; and

4. Does research on attitudes and values     conducted overseas apply in Singapore     schools?
